Helms, Smith Receive Award for Research


Dr. Marilyn Helms, a professor of management and sesquicentennial chair, and Dr. Doug Smith, a professor of accounting and foundation chair, were recently awarded the Lybrand Certificate of Merit for published research.

The article, also co-authored by James Byrd at the University of Alabama Birmingham, is titled “Can Traditional Procedures Used in Accounting and Purchasing Reduce Today’s Healthcare Costs?” It was published in the September 2015 issue of Strategic Finance as “Healthcare Fraud: Time for a Cure?”

The article examines the impact of the current payment process for healthcare costs as well as possible links to rising costs, billing errors, and fraud. Possible solutions are explored to improve the process.
